March 10, 2004 -- This week the The National Barbecue Association held it's annual convention in Atlanta Georgia. It is the annual gathering of the world of Barbecue most experience and inexperience barbecuer's . There were participants from as far as Paris and Stutgard Germany.A local guru Ed Smokey Wilson of Wilson's Holy Smoke restaurant soon to open in Fairfield on the post road, was in attendance for the second year . The event is a hosts seminars, cooking demonstrations, and a trade show. All in an effort to boost interest and knowledge of the Art of Barbecue. Ed says its' an art because like a painting people create what they think and like as their form of what is pleasing to them. Barbecue is the same, in competitions the competitors use what they think will please the judges.Ed has traveled extensively throughout the country for the past 4 years researching the art form (as he puts it) of Barbecue. He has competed in cookoffs in Maryland, Massachuttes, Vermont, Memphis in May, Murphysboro Ill., Tennessee. The team he has worked on was the Smoke Ring. While a member of the team they won the state championship in Maryland and the New England Regional Championship in Vermont. Which qualified them two years in a row to compete at the grand daddy of competitions The Jack Daniels in Tennesse, where the team placed in the top ten ( out of 50) teams both years.Ed has been working on putting project a team together prior to commencing construction and opening of his first Barbecue Joint in Connecticut. He hopes to open before June. He is very involved the in Barbecue community, acting as the state representative for the New England Barbecue Society, and as a certified Kanas City Barbecue Society Judge.

The Great Smoky Mountains Appalachian Trail - Its official name is the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. From 1st of June 2009, the government of the United States is placing the laws of Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) into effect as a means of stabilizing and strengthening the borders involving Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean region and the United States. You would need to get your Passport in order to go in and out of these multifold places. Therefore, the simplest solution to steering the governments policies is to get a Passport. Even though you might be able to travel to a few of your neighboring places with only your license or Identification Card but in order to get in the States, you would need your Passport. To cut it short and that too, simply, you need to produce your passport, in order to travel home by air. According to the regulations of WHTI, you would even need to produce your passport if you are crossing the border checkpoint via a boat, in your car, or even by foot. The declaration of you citizenship would no longer work. And just to recap the previous statements, WHTI now requires all the travelers to offer their passport or other approved secure document which denotes your identity and your citizenship for travel through sea, land or air. Good Point Recycling Hosts Lithuanian Smelter Representatives: DeConsus America investing in electronics recycling for European and USA generatorsMIDDLEBURY, VERMONT:Good Point Recycling, the TV and Computer Recycling division of American Retroworks Inc., added a new staff member in December. Jonas Kriauciunas, a representative of DeConsus, will be working several different shifts at the Vermont Recycling plant, taking notes and translating Environmental and Safety Management (ESM) policies for sharing and discussion at the Consus BalticAl smelter in Kaunas, Lithuania.Robin Ingenthron, founder of Good Point Recycling, welcomed Mr. Kriauciunas to Middlebury. "I learned a lot about due diligence by trucking, testing and separating. I think Jonas' volunteering to work in the trenches in the USA is a great start for a Lithuanian company interested in best environmental practices." Ingenthron and Kriauciunas plan to travel to Lithuania in the summer, to see how environmentally safe management has been translated.DeConsus controls the major aluminum refining and smelting operations in Lithuania, which sells primarily to Mercedes Benz in Germany. In the future, DeConsus will decide whether to offer more of the demanufacturing and testing at their facility in Kaunas, Lithuania, but American Retroworks will continue to provide domestic hard drive destruction and CRT glass recycling. They have already contacted Lithuania's environmental ministry, which is the chief contact for the Basel Convention."In Lithuania, the old attitude towards environmental protection was, 'give them a pound of paper'." says Kriauciunas. "It was all about bureaucracy. Today DeConsus and Good Point Recycling believe that environmental diligence is good business. It's about environmental results." Cuban-Americans ask U.S. government to relax restrictions on travel and remittances to Cuba.

Washington, D.C. April 20, 2004 -- As Cuban-Americans we yearn for a normal relationship with our country of origin. We have families on the island that we desire to visit and help on a regular basis. U.S. laws severely limit our ability to visit and to send remittances to our loved ones in Cuba, and the Bush Administration's recent suspension of the U.S./Cuba migration conversations threaten to further isolate us from our families.We are now permitted only one family visit to Cuba within a twelve-month period, and our remittances are limited to only $1200 per family per year.It is immoral to premise our foreign policy toward Cuba on isolating the Cuban people from their loved ones and causing unnecessary economic hardship to our families there. Moreover, we have a constitutional right to travel to Cuba to visit our families, and we have a constitutional right to send remittances without any arbitrary restrictions imposed on us by the United States government.The U.S. Interests Section in Havana routinely denies visitors' visas to our families in Cuba, because of concerns that under the terms of the Cuban Adjustment Act any Cuban who touches U.S. soil is eligible to remain as a lawful permanent resident. As a result, Cubans risk their lives by trying to cross the dangerous Florida straights on flimsy rafts in an often fatal effort to reach U.S. shores. Many Cuban men, women and children have lost their lives trying to cross those shark-infested waters. It is immoral to entice innocent people to risk their lives for a green card. We ask that the Congress eliminate the Cuban Adjustment Act and restore normalcy to visa processing at the U.S. Interests Section. The United States agreed in the Migration Accords it signed with Cuba not to put human lives at risk or to encourage illegal and dangerous immigration, yet the Cuban Adjustment Act does precisely that by rewarding those arrive illegally on U.S. shores and punishing those who would apply for nonimmigrant visas at the U.S. Consulate in Havana only to receive denials.Earlier this year, the Bush Administration unilaterally suspended the regular conversations it had with Cuba regarding migration issues.
